Platform & Fly-Through Bird Feeders

Platform and fly-through feeders are the most versatile and bird-friendly feeder designs available — welcoming the widest variety of species of any feeder type. Open on all sides, these feeders allow birds to approach from any direction, land comfortably, and feed without crowding or competition.

Why Platform Feeders Attract More Bird Species

Most tube and hopper feeders are designed for small, clinging birds. Platform feeders welcome everyone — from tiny chickadees and finches to larger birds like cardinals, jays, doves, and even woodpeckers. If you want maximum bird diversity in your garden, a platform or fly-through feeder is the single best investment you can make.

Platform vs. Fly-Through: What's the Difference?

  • Platform feeders: Open tray design, often with a roof for weather protection. Can be hanging, pole-mounted, or freestanding. Maximum visibility for bird watching.
  • Fly-through feeders: Open on all four sides with a roof above. Birds can enter and exit from any direction. Reduces territorial behavior and allows multiple species to feed simultaneously.

Fill It Like a Plate, Not a Pantry

A platform feeder stores nothing — everything in the tray is exposed to rain, snow and droppings. Put out only what your birds will clear in a day and top it up daily rather than loading it weekly. The full guide explains why, and which designs make it easiest.

Best Seeds for Platform Feeders

  • Black oil sunflower seeds — the universal favorite
  • Safflower seeds — loved by cardinals, ignored by squirrels
  • Mixed seed blends — attract the widest variety of species
  • Peanuts in shell — attract jays, woodpeckers, and nuthatches
