Hanging Bird Feeders

Hanging bird feeders are the most versatile and widely used feeder type — easy to position, easy to move, and endlessly effective at attracting birds to exactly where you want them. Hang from a tree branch, a garden hook, a pergola beam, or a dedicated feeding pole and watch the birds come.

Advantages of Hanging Feeders

  • Flexible placement: Move them anywhere — no permanent installation required
  • Natural feel: Birds are accustomed to finding food suspended in trees and shrubs — hanging feeders feel instinctively safe
  • Great viewing angles: Position at eye level from a window for the best bird watching experience
  • Wide choice of styles: From handcrafted cedar hoppers to open trays, mesh feeders and decorative glass

Best Placement for Hanging Feeders

Where you hang the feeder matters more than which feeder you buy. Three distances do most of the work against squirrels:

  • At least 5 feet off the ground — roughly how high a squirrel can jump from a standing start
  • At least 7 feet horizontally from any launch point: fence, shed roof, wall, tree trunk or garden furniture
  • At least 9 feet below any overhanging branch — squirrels drop down onto feeders more often than they climb up

A tree branch fails all three at once, which is why hanging a feeder from one so often disappoints. If no spot in your garden clears these numbers, a pole with a baffle is the real fix — see our bird feeding stations.

Two More Placement Rules

  • Windows: hang either closer than 3 feet to the glass, or more than 30 feet away. Within 3 feet a startled bird can't build up enough speed to be hurt by the reflection; beyond 30 feet the reflection no longer reads as a flight path. The middle distance is where strikes happen.
  • Cover: about 10–12 feet from a shrub or hedge — close enough for birds to escape to, far enough that a cat can't ambush from inside it
