A platform feeder with a roof over it is the one feeder that suits almost every seed-eating bird, and this one is built to look like a country covered bridge. The Amish Handcrafted Reclaimed Barnwood Covered Bridge Fly-Through Bird Feeder is made by Amish woodworkers in Pennsylvania (per supplier) from reclaimed, weathered barnwood with a dark metal roof. Because the wood is reclaimed, every feeder has its own grain, nail holes and colour. Free shipping & 30-day returns.

Why a Covered Fly-Through Feeder Works

  • Open on all four sides: birds can land, eat and leave in any direction, and they can see around them while they feed. Larger birds that dislike small perches, like Northern Cardinals, jays and Mourning Doves, are comfortable on a flat tray.
  • A roof over the seed: the pitched metal roof keeps rain and snow off the food, so seed stays drier than on an open tray.
  • Screened floor: the tray has a screen bottom that lets water drain through, and it holds about 1 quart (about 1.5 lb) of seed.
  • Easy to fill: one wooden slat at the end of the bridge lifts up, held by a chain, so you can reach in to refill and clean.
  • Heavy and post-mounted: it ships at about 17 lb and comes with a 6 × 6 in mounting plate and hardware to fix it on top of a wooden post.

What to Feed, and Who Comes

A covered tray takes almost any food. Safflower and black-oil sunflower bring cardinals, chickadees, titmice, finches and nuthatches. Mealworms are what bring Eastern Bluebirds and robins, since they don't eat seed. You can also put out suet, peanuts or fruit for woodpeckers, jays and orioles.

Good to know: an open tray is open to every bird, so grackles, starlings and house sparrows will visit too, and squirrels will if they can reach it. Safflower is the seed those birds like least, which makes it the best choice if you mainly want cardinals. Mount it on a post at least 10 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from, and add a baffle on the post if squirrels are a problem.

Frequently asked questions

What is this made from?

The exact materials for this piece are listed in the specifications above. Across the range we use untreated cedar, kiln-dried hardwood, metal, ceramic, glass, recycled cotton and preserved moss. A few designs — window feeders and the recycled-plastic range — do use plastic, and where they do it is stated on the product page.

Will it look exactly like the photo?

Images are representative. Our range comes from a number of independent workshops and suppliers, so an item may occasionally differ slightly from the photo in finish, grain, colour or small details. Natural wood and hand-finished pieces are never identical to one another. We are bringing more of the range into our own inventory to reduce this. If what arrives is not what you expected, email support@birdlover.store — returns are free for 30 days.

How does shipping work?

Shipping is free on every order, to all 28 countries in our delivery zone — you will see whether yours is covered at checkout. The range comes from a number of different small workshops and suppliers, so dispatch times vary from piece to piece, and items in the same order may arrive separately. We would rather not quote a delivery window we cannot keep, so we do not: you will get tracking by email as soon as your order ships.

Can I leave it outside all year?

Nearly everything here is built for year-round outdoor use — check the specifications above if you are unsure about a particular piece. Untreated wood will silver and weather over time; that is normal and does not affect how it works.

What if it is not right?

Return it within 30 days of delivery for a refund, for any reason. Return shipping is free — email support@birdlover.store and we will send you a prepaid return label. If it arrived damaged or we sent the wrong item, send a photo and we will put it right straight away. Refunds are issued within 5–7 business days of the item reaching us. EU customers also have a 14-day right of withdrawal.
