An umbrella canopy is the simplest answer to the oldest problem in bird feeding: seed and rain. The canopy is wider than the tray beneath it, so water runs off the edge and falls clear rather than soaking into the food. No drainage holes to unblock, no clever mechanism — just a roof that is bigger than the thing it covers.
It does a second job people notice more. A canopy that wide shades the tray, and shade keeps seed from cooking in July — which is when oily seed like sunflower turns rancid fastest.

Will the finish last outdoors?
Iron outdoors will weather, and a painted finish on any metal feeder softens over the seasons. Hanging it under an eave or a branch rather than in full open weather adds years. We would rather tell you that than claim it stays showroom-new.
What should I put in it?
An open tray suits a mixed seed leaning on sunflower. It also takes mealworms and fruit, which is how you bring in birds a seed feeder never gets — orioles, robins, mockingbirds.
Does an open tray waste seed?
Some, yes — birds sort and scatter. Fill it shallow and often rather than deep and rarely. What lands underneath usually gets cleared by ground feeders.
Is it squirrel proof?

How do I clean it?
Tip it out, brush it down, wash and dry fully. Open trays need it more often than enclosed hoppers because everything is exposed.
