Two and a half kilos of seed — 2.6 lb — in a feeder small enough to hang from a shepherd's crook. That is the point of this one. Most hanging feeders that size hold a few handfuls and need refilling every other morning; this holds enough to run a busy garden for the better part of a week, which in January is the difference between birds treating your garden as reliable and treating it as occasional.

Reliability matters more than people expect. Birds build a feeding route and check it daily; a feeder that is empty half the time drops off that route.

The lid twists shut

You line the lid up and turn it about half a turn, the way you'd close a jar, and it seats and locks. Nothing to unclip, nothing to lose in the grass, and a squirrel leaning on the rim is pushing down on a locked collar rather than levering up a loose lid. Turn it back to refill.

Hexagonal terrace, sloping roof

The base flares out into a six-sided shelf so birds can feed from any angle and shuffle round rather than queue. As seed is taken from the ports, gravity refills the tray — nothing to adjust.

The roof overhangs that shelf on every side, so rain runs off the eaves and lands outside the feeding ring instead of into it. Wet seed is what kills most open feeders inside two months.

You can see the level from indoors

The body is see-through, so you know when it needs filling without going outside in the rain to check. Sounds cosmetic; it is the single thing that makes people actually keep a feeder topped up.

Questions people ask

What can I fill it with?
Peanuts, sunflower seed and general mixes all work. A sunflower-heavy mix brings in the widest range without leaving filler seed on the ground.

Which birds will use it?
The shelf is wide enough for cardinals and jays as well as the clinging birds — chickadees, titmice, nuthatches and finches. Ground feeders will work the spill underneath.

Is it squirrel proof?
No. The twist lid stops a squirrel simply flipping the top off and emptying it, which is the usual raid, but nothing here stops one sitting on the shelf and eating. A pole with a baffle is the only thing that reliably does — or see our squirrel proof bird feeders.

How do I clean it?
Lid off, box out, hot soapy water, dry completely before refilling. Every couple of weeks in warm weather.

Where should I hang it?
About ten feet from cover — close enough that birds have an escape route, far enough that cats cannot launch from it.

Frequently asked questions

What is this made from?

The exact materials for this piece are listed in the specifications above. Across the range we use untreated cedar, kiln-dried hardwood, metal, ceramic, glass, recycled cotton and preserved moss. A few designs — window feeders and the recycled-plastic range — do use plastic, and where they do it is stated on the product page.

How fast will it arrive?

Dispatch time varies by item, because the range comes from a number of different small workshops and suppliers. You will get tracking by email as soon as your order ships, and shipping is free on every order. If you need something by a particular date, email brand@birdlover.store before you order and we will tell you honestly what is realistic.

Can I leave it outside all year?

Nearly everything here is built for year-round outdoor use — check the specifications above if you are unsure about a particular piece. Untreated wood will silver and weather over time; that is normal and does not affect how it works.

What if it is not right?

Return it within 30 days for a refund, and we pay the return postage. If anything arrives damaged, email brand@birdlover.store with a photo and we will replace it.
