Wide and shallow is the specification that matters in a bird bath, and it is the one most designs get wrong. Songbirds will not enter water they cannot stand up in — a deep decorative bowl gets used as a drinking cup and never as a bath. This one is broad and shallow on purpose, so several birds can stand in it at once and actually bathe.

Bathing is not vanity. Wet feathers get preened, and preening is how a bird redistributes oil and keeps its plumage waterproof and insulating. In winter that is survival, not grooming, which is why a bath brings in species that ignore a feeder entirely.

It hangs, so it goes where a pedestal cannot

No stand, no assembly, no tools. It hangs from a branch, a shepherd's crook, a bracket or a balcony rail — which puts water within reach of flats and small yards that have no ground to sink a pedestal into.

How deep should I fill it?
An inch, an inch and a half at most. Add a few flat pebbles so the smallest birds have somewhere to stand.

Which birds will use it?
The manufacturer lists finches, doves, woodpeckers, jays, wrens, warblers and sparrows — which matches what a wide shallow bath attracts generally. Water is the one thing every garden bird needs.

How often do I change the water?
Every two to three days in warm weather. Tip, brush, refill. A copper bird bath disk slows the green between changes.

Can I put seed in it instead?
Yes — it works as an open tray feeder. Fill shallow and top up often rather than loading it deep, since an open tray has no cover from rain.

Will it survive a frost?
A plastic bowl handles freezing far better than ceramic or concrete, which crack. Tip it out before a hard freeze anyway.
