Green water is the reason most bird baths get abandoned by July. You fill it, four days of sun turn it to soup, and scrubbing it every weekend gets old fast. The usual fixes — algaecides, bleach, chlorine tablets — are all things you should never put in water birds drink.

This is the alternative: a solid copper disk that sits in the bottom of the bath. Copper releases trace ions into standing water, and algae and biofilm struggle to establish where those ions are present. It is the same principle behind copper in ponds and roof strips — nothing is added to the water except the metal already sitting in it.

What it actually does, and what it doesn't

Being straight about this, because the category oversells. A copper disk slows algae growth. It does not sterilise water, it does not replace changing it, and it will not rescue a bath that already has a green film on it. What it buys you is longer between scrubs — and it keeps working every day of the season with nothing to top up.

You still change the water. Standing water is a mosquito nursery within about a week regardless of what is in it, and birds need it fresh.

Triple-point support, so it stays put

The underside has a three-point support structure rather than a flat face. That does two things: it keeps the disk from sliding when a bird lands on it, and it holds a gap underneath so water circulates on both faces rather than sealing against the basin.

It also just looks good

Copper in a bath of water is a genuinely attractive thing, and it weathers the way copper does — bright at first, then warming through bronze towards a soft patina. That patina is copper oxide and does not stop it working.

Questions people ask

Is copper safe for birds?
At the trace levels a small disk releases into an open bath that is refreshed regularly, yes — copper is used in drinking-water plumbing for the same reason. Change the water rather than letting it sit and concentrate.

How long does it last?
Indefinitely. It is a solid piece of metal. It will change colour, not wear out.

Will it work in a plastic or concrete bath?
Yes — the disk works on the water, not the basin. Concrete baths go green fastest because the rough surface gives algae something to grip, so they benefit most.

Do I still need to scrub?
Yes, just less often. Rinse and brush when you change the water; a stiff brush and plain water is enough, and avoid detergent.

Can I use two?
In a large bath, yes, and it will help. One is plenty for a standard pedestal bowl.

Frequently asked questions

What is this made from?

The exact materials for this piece are listed in the specifications above. Across the range we use untreated cedar, kiln-dried hardwood, metal, ceramic, glass, recycled cotton and preserved moss. A few designs — window feeders and the recycled-plastic range — do use plastic, and where they do it is stated on the product page.

How fast will it arrive?

Dispatch time varies by item, because the range comes from a number of different small workshops and suppliers. You will get tracking by email as soon as your order ships, and shipping is free on every order. If you need something by a particular date, email brand@birdlover.store before you order and we will tell you honestly what is realistic.

Can I leave it outside all year?

Nearly everything here is built for year-round outdoor use — check the specifications above if you are unsure about a particular piece. Untreated wood will silver and weather over time; that is normal and does not affect how it works.

What if it is not right?

Return it within 30 days for a refund, and we pay the return postage. If anything arrives damaged, email brand@birdlover.store with a photo and we will replace it.
