Most bird feeders are equipment you tolerate for the birds they bring. This one is a garden object first — an abstract tree form in a neutral finish, about the size of a large mug, that happens to hold seed. If your outdoor space is a balcony or a small patio where everything in it is on show, that distinction is the whole purchase.

Small on purpose

At 5.9 inches it holds a modest amount of seed, and that suits a balcony better than a big hopper would. Small quantities eaten quickly means seed stays fresh, nothing rots in the tray, and there is no drift of husks over a neighbour's furniture below.

It suits the birds a balcony actually gets, too — finches, robins, sparrows and tits rather than jays and pigeons.

Textured surface, which is a grip detail

The finish is embossed rather than smooth. On a small feeder that matters: a slick surface in the wet gives a small bird nothing to hold, and a textured one gives claws something to grip when it is raining.

One thing we will not claim

The supplier's own listing is inconsistent about the material — the specification table says wood while the description says resin. We have asked, and until we have a straight answer we are not going to print either as fact. If material matters to you, message us before ordering and we will confirm it in writing. What we can say is that it is described as all-weather and designed to stay outside year round.

Questions people ask

How much seed does it hold?
A small amount — think a scoop, topped up every couple of days. That is the trade for something this size and this discreet. For capacity see our hanging bird feeders.

What should I put in it?
Sunflower hearts. No husks to clear off a balcony floor, and they suit exactly the small birds this size of feeder attracts.

Will birds find it on a balcony?
It can take a few weeks, especially above ground level. A pot plant beside it helps enormously — birds approach cover first and open space second.

Does it hang or stand?
It is designed to stand — on a table, wall top, railing ledge or in a planter. Put it somewhere it cannot be knocked off by wind.

How do I clean it?
Empty it, brush the recess out and rinse. Little and often, because a small open recess collects damp quickly.

Frequently asked questions

What is this made from?

The exact materials for this piece are listed in the specifications above. Across the range we use untreated cedar, kiln-dried hardwood, metal, ceramic, glass, recycled cotton and preserved moss. A few designs — window feeders and the recycled-plastic range — do use plastic, and where they do it is stated on the product page.

How fast will it arrive?

Dispatch time varies by item, because the range comes from a number of different small workshops and suppliers. You will get tracking by email as soon as your order ships, and shipping is free on every order. If you need something by a particular date, email brand@birdlover.store before you order and we will tell you honestly what is realistic.

Can I leave it outside all year?

Nearly everything here is built for year-round outdoor use — check the specifications above if you are unsure about a particular piece. Untreated wood will silver and weather over time; that is normal and does not affect how it works.

What if it is not right?

Return it within 30 days for a refund, and we pay the return postage. If anything arrives damaged, email brand@birdlover.store with a photo and we will replace it.
