The thing nobody tells you about hummingbird feeders is that the big ones are a mistake. Sugar water ferments — in warm weather it starts turning within two or three days, and fermented nectar and the black mould that follows it are genuinely dangerous to a bird whose whole body weighs less than a five-pence piece.

A large reservoir just means more nectar going off before it gets drunk. A small feeder you empty and refill every couple of days is safer, cheaper to run, and keeps hummingbirds coming back because what is in it is always fresh.

It comes apart, which is the whole point

Every part separates for cleaning. That matters more here than on any seed feeder: nectar residue gets into threads and corners, and a feeder you can only rinse from the outside grows mould where you cannot see it. This one you can take fully apart, scrub and dry.

No detergent. Hot water and a bottle brush, and rinse thoroughly — soap residue in nectar puts birds off entirely.

Small enough to hang anywhere

Clear plastic and light, on a hanging wire, so it goes on a balcony rail, a window bracket, a shepherd's crook or a branch without any of them needing to take weight. Hang two or three in different spots rather than one big one — hummingbirds are fiercely territorial and a single feeder usually ends up guarded by one bird who chases everything else off.

What to fill it with

Four parts water to one part plain white sugar, stirred until dissolved. Nothing else. No red dye — the colour on the feeder is what attracts them and dye has no benefit. No honey, no brown sugar, no sweetener; honey ferments dangerously fast.

Questions people ask

How often do I change the nectar?
Every two days above 26°C, every three to four in mild weather. If it looks cloudy, it has already turned.

Why is nothing visiting it?
Give it a few weeks, and put it near flowers — hummingbirds find feeders by investigating colour near a known nectar source. Somewhere with a perch nearby helps too.

Do wasps and ants get in?
They try. An ant moat above the feeder stops ants; for wasps, keep the outside wiped clean of spilled syrup, which is what draws them.

When should I put it out and take it in?
Out a couple of weeks before hummingbirds are due in your area, and leave it up a few weeks after you see the last one — late migrants rely on stragglers' feeders.
