A bird bath is the one thing in the garden that birds visit whether or not you feed them, so it might as well be beautiful. This Hand-Painted Mexican Talavera Ceramic Pedestal Bird Bath is painted by hand in Mexico in Terracotta Brown & White or Cobalt Blue & White, with a large eight-petal blossom in the center of the basin and white floral scrollwork around it. Because every piece is painted freehand, no two are exactly alike. Free shipping & 30-day returns.

Why It Works in a Real Garden

  • About 30 lb of solid ceramic: the weight sits low in the pedestal, so it stands steadier on a patio or level lawn than a light resin or metal bath.
  • A wide 18–20 in basin: room for several birds at once. Cardinals, robins, bluebirds, finches and mourning doves are among the common visitors to a pedestal bath.
  • Lead-free glaze (per supplier): a smooth glazed surface that rinses clean with a brush and plain water.
  • 27 in tall: a standard pedestal height that keeps bathing birds up off the ground and lets you see them from the house.

Getting Birds to Use It

Birds like shallow water, about 1–2 inches. If the center of the basin is deeper than that, set a few flat stones in it so smaller birds have a place to stand. Put the bath in the open, about 10–15 feet from a shrub or tree, so birds have cover nearby without a cat being able to hide right next to it. Change the water every two or three days.

Winter Care — Please Read

Talavera is traditional, low-fired pottery, and water that freezes in the basin or soaks into an unglazed area can crack it. Empty the bath and store it indoors, or somewhere it stays above freezing, before the first frost. In warm climates it can stay out all year. Don't put a bath heater in it. If you want open water for birds through the winter, our 150W Made-in-USA Heated Bird Bath with Metal Stand is built for that.

Frequently asked questions

What is this made from?

The exact materials for this piece are listed in the specifications above. Across the range we use untreated cedar, kiln-dried hardwood, metal, ceramic, glass, recycled cotton and preserved moss. A few designs — window feeders and the recycled-plastic range — do use plastic, and where they do it is stated on the product page.

Will it look exactly like the photo?

Images are representative. Our range comes from a number of independent workshops and suppliers, so an item may occasionally differ slightly from the photo in finish, grain, colour or small details. Natural wood and hand-finished pieces are never identical to one another. We are bringing more of the range into our own inventory to reduce this. If what arrives is not what you expected, email support@birdlover.store — returns are free for 30 days.

How does shipping work?

Shipping is free on every order, to all 28 countries in our delivery zone — you will see whether yours is covered at checkout. The range comes from a number of different small workshops and suppliers, so dispatch times vary from piece to piece, and items in the same order may arrive separately. We would rather not quote a delivery window we cannot keep, so we do not: you will get tracking by email as soon as your order ships.

Can I leave it outside all year?

Nearly everything here is built for year-round outdoor use — check the specifications above if you are unsure about a particular piece. Untreated wood will silver and weather over time; that is normal and does not affect how it works.

What if it is not right?

Return it within 30 days of delivery for a refund, for any reason. Return shipping is free — email support@birdlover.store and we will send you a prepaid return label. If it arrived damaged or we sent the wrong item, send a photo and we will put it right straight away. Refunds are issued within 5–7 business days of the item reaching us. EU customers also have a 14-day right of withdrawal.
