Every camera feeder has the same failure mode. You mount it, you get a fortnight of cardinals and chickadees, and then a grey squirrel finds it — and from that point your phone buzzes all day with footage of the same animal emptying the hopper. The seed bill triples and the notifications become noise.
This one puts the recognition engine to work on that problem. The same AI that classifies what lands on the perch is used to spot a squirrel and trigger a deterrent response, rather than simply filing another clip. That is the difference between a camera that watches your feeder get raided and one that does something about it.
4MP behind the glass, 2K video out
The camera is a 4-megapixel module mounted inside the hopper looking out at the perch, a few inches from where a bird actually lands. The manufacturer rates the video output at 2K. Close range is what matters more than the number: a 4MP sensor a hand's width from a goldfinch resolves the feather detail that the same sensor twenty feet away never will.
Setup is a QR code scan to join your WiFi. The companion app shown throughout the manufacturer's materials is HiBirds, and it pushes a notification the moment motion is detected.
5200 mAh and a solar panel
The battery is 5200 mAh, topped up by a solar panel on the roof, so the feeder can go where the birds are rather than where the sockets are. Charge it fully over USB before the first mount — solar maintains a charged battery well and fills an empty one slowly, and a shaded position leans harder on that first charge.
Built from ABS, and sized honestly
The body is ABS — the same plastic used for outdoor tool housings, chosen because it takes UV and frost without going brittle the way cheaper polystyrene blends do.
It measures 205 × 275 × 265 mm (8.1 × 10.8 × 10.4 in) and weighs 1186 g. Under three pounds is worth knowing: it is light enough for the tree strap, and light enough that a windy site wants the screw bracket instead.
The perch bar is the part people underrate
The tray carries a suet-ball cage, a fruit spike and an open perch bar rather than just a seed lip. Seed alone photographs seed-eaters. Put half an orange on the spike and you get orioles; put a fat ball in the cage and the woodpeckers arrive. Which birds appear in your notifications is something you control from that tray.

How does the squirrel deterrent actually work?
The manufacturer describes an AI-powered squirrel-repelling system built into the recognition engine, but has not published the deterrent mechanism — whether it is sound, motion or something else — or any effectiveness testing. We are not going to invent a description. If the squirrel function is the reason you are buying, message us first and we will get it in writing from the manufacturer before you order.
Is there a subscription?
No subscription or cloud-storage terms were supplied to us. Ask us before ordering if that decides it for you.
Does it have night vision, and is it weather-rated?
No night-vision specification and no IP rating were provided. Treat it as a daylight camera and give it a sheltered aspect. If you need a published weather rating, our wired nest box cameras carry one.
How is this different from your other camera feeder?
Our smart bird feeder with camera is the larger, simpler unit — a bigger 13-inch hopper and the same solar and battery setup, without the squirrel function. This one is more compact, quotes a 4MP sensor, and adds the squirrel-repelling system. Pick this one if squirrels are your problem; pick that one if capacity is.
Will it stop squirrels reaching the seed physically?
No. There is no weight-triggered shutter or cage here, so it is not a mechanical squirrel-proof feeder in the way our squirrel-resistant range is. A pole with a baffle underneath remains the most reliable defence there is, and works alongside this.
Where should I mount it?
Ten feet or so from cover, with the lens facing away from the low morning sun, and within reliable WiFi range. Check your signal at the exact spot before you drill.
