A small, solid cedar nest box with an open front, the kind of half-enclosed spot Carolina Wrens choose for their nests. The BIRDLOVER Handcrafted Cedar Open-Front Nest Box is untreated cedar, arrives assembled, and has a hinged front door with a brass latch, so you can clear out the old nest at the end of the season in seconds. Starter cedar wood shavings and mounting screws are in the box. Free shipping & 30-day returns.

Why You'll Like It

  • Sized for Carolina Wrens: about 7 inches tall on a 6 × 6 inch base, close to Cornell Lab NestWatch's Carolina Wren plan (7 inches deep inside). Carolina Wrens often nest in half-open spots such as flowerpots and mailboxes, and the open upper front gives them that.
  • Untreated cedar: no paint, stain or preservative on the wood (per supplier), so there is nothing on the inside walls but cedar.
  • Hinged clean-out door: open the brass latch and the lower front swings open, so you can tip out the old nest. Cleaning a box once nesting is over helps cut down on mites and parasites before next spring.
  • Ready to hang: arrives assembled with starter wood shavings and mounting screws.

Where to Put It

NestWatch suggests 3 to 6 feet off the ground for Carolina Wrens, fixed to a building, a fence post or a tree, facing any direction. Somewhere sheltered from driving rain, near shrubs or a hedge, suits the open front best. Because the front is open, House Sparrows can get in too: if they start building, remove their nest material, since they are a non-native species that competes with native birds.

Is This an Owl Box?

No. At about 7 inches tall it is far smaller than an owl needs: NestWatch plans call for an 8 × 8 inch floor and a box 12 to 15 inches deep for screech owls, and saw-whet owls need a box 10 to 12 inches deep. This is a songbird-sized box.

Frequently asked questions

What is this made from?

The exact materials for this piece are listed in the specifications above. Across the range we use untreated cedar, kiln-dried hardwood, metal, ceramic, glass, recycled cotton and preserved moss. A few designs — window feeders and the recycled-plastic range — do use plastic, and where they do it is stated on the product page.

Will it look exactly like the photo?

Images are representative. Our range comes from a number of independent workshops and suppliers, so an item may occasionally differ slightly from the photo in finish, grain, colour or small details. Natural wood and hand-finished pieces are never identical to one another. We are bringing more of the range into our own inventory to reduce this. If what arrives is not what you expected, email support@birdlover.store — returns are free for 30 days.

How does shipping work?

Shipping is free on every order, to all 28 countries in our delivery zone — you will see whether yours is covered at checkout. The range comes from a number of different small workshops and suppliers, so dispatch times vary from piece to piece, and items in the same order may arrive separately. We would rather not quote a delivery window we cannot keep, so we do not: you will get tracking by email as soon as your order ships.

Can I leave it outside all year?

Nearly everything here is built for year-round outdoor use — check the specifications above if you are unsure about a particular piece. Untreated wood will silver and weather over time; that is normal and does not affect how it works.

What if it is not right?

Return it within 30 days of delivery for a refund, for any reason. Return shipping is free — email support@birdlover.store and we will send you a prepaid return label. If it arrived damaged or we sent the wrong item, send a photo and we will put it right straight away. Refunds are issued within 5–7 business days of the item reaching us. EU customers also have a 14-day right of withdrawal.
