A safe, dry place for backyard bluebirds to raise their young, with the details that decide whether a nest succeeds.

Plenty of decorative birdhouses look charming on a shelf but miss what nesting birds actually need: airflow, protection at the entrance, and a way for chicks to climb out. The BIRDLOVER Handcrafted Cedar Bluebird House combines 0.6-inch thick wood walls with a stainless steel entrance guard, an elevated wire mesh floor and interior fledgling climbing grooves.

Why Backyard Birders Choose This Nesting Box

  • Stainless steel entrance guard: A metal plate reinforces the 1.5-inch entrance hole so squirrels and woodpeckers can't chew or peck it wider. For raccoons, cats and snakes, add a baffle on the mounting pole as well. That is the standard advice, and an entrance guard alone doesn't stop climbing predators.
  • Elevated mesh floor: The nest sits on a raised stainless steel mesh above the floorboard, so air moves underneath and moisture drains away. It also helps against blowfly larvae, which live in the bottom of the nest.
  • Fledgling climbing grooves: Horizontal grooves cut into the inside of the front wall, below the entrance, give young birds a grip to climb out when they're ready to fledge.
  • 0.6" thick walls and a rain-shedding roof: Thick wood panels buffer chicks against cold spring nights and summer heat. Top vents allow cross-ventilation, and a slanted, stepped black roof channels rain away from the box.
  • Tool-free clean-out door: Turn the side metal latch and the front panel swings open for end-of-season cleaning and quick nest checks.
  • Easy to mount: An extended backboard with pre-drilled top and bottom holes fits wooden fence posts, 4×4 posts or trees.

Which Birds It Suits

The 1.5-inch entrance is the standard size for Eastern and Western Bluebirds, and also suits Tree Swallows, Violet-green Swallows, Black-capped Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Nuthatches and House Wrens. Mountain Bluebirds prefer a slightly larger 1⁹⁄₁₆-inch hole.

💡 Watch the nest live: Want to see your bluebirds build, lay and hatch on your phone? Pair this house with a bird box camera. The 4MP HD Wireless Bird Box Camera with External WiFi Antenna ($99) uses a phone app with motion alerts. The 43mm Mini WiFi Bird Box Camera with 940nm Night Vision ($124) is the smallest option and can stream straight to YouTube.

Frequently asked questions

What is this made from?

The exact materials for this piece are listed in the specifications above. Across the range we use untreated cedar, kiln-dried hardwood, metal, ceramic, glass, recycled cotton and preserved moss. A few designs — window feeders and the recycled-plastic range — do use plastic, and where they do it is stated on the product page.

Will it look exactly like the photo?

Images are representative. Our range comes from a number of independent workshops and suppliers, so an item may occasionally differ slightly from the photo in finish, grain, colour or small details. Natural wood and hand-finished pieces are never identical to one another. We are bringing more of the range into our own inventory to reduce this. If what arrives is not what you expected, email support@birdlover.store — returns are free for 30 days.

How does shipping work?

Shipping is free on every order, to all 28 countries in our delivery zone — you will see whether yours is covered at checkout. The range comes from a number of different small workshops and suppliers, so dispatch times vary from piece to piece, and items in the same order may arrive separately. We would rather not quote a delivery window we cannot keep, so we do not: you will get tracking by email as soon as your order ships.

Can I leave it outside all year?

Nearly everything here is built for year-round outdoor use — check the specifications above if you are unsure about a particular piece. Untreated wood will silver and weather over time; that is normal and does not affect how it works.

What if it is not right?

Return it within 30 days of delivery for a refund, for any reason. Return shipping is free — email support@birdlover.store and we will send you a prepaid return label. If it arrived damaged or we sent the wrong item, send a photo and we will put it right straight away. Refunds are issued within 5–7 business days of the item reaching us. EU customers also have a 14-day right of withdrawal.
